When I awoke on the morning of Thursday March 28th, I was completely shocked to see a message from TSN Sports Centre app that the Pittsburgh Penguins had acquired Jarome Iginla from the Calgary Flames. Going the other way for the Flames are a first round pick in this year’s entry draft and prospects Ben Hanowski and Kenny Agostino.
This was a huge surprise to me for I honestly believed that general manager Ray Shero did not have any major moves left to make before next week’s trade deadline as they had just acquired former Dallas Stars captain Brenden Morrow and physical defenseman Douglas Murray from the San Jose Sharks. I never truly thought that there was even a miniscule chance of Iginla moving east to Pittsburgh.
The Penguins are gaining a 16 year veteran right handed shot that has scored 50 goals twice in his career, he is a former Art Ross winner, former captain and plays a hard hitting game. I truly believe he will play on the first line with Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz. Iginla has struggled this season and only has 9 goals so far, but by putting him on a line with the first and third leading scorers will assist him in shaking off that slow start.
It is a very exciting time in the city of Pittsburgh and the fans of the team, myself included amongst them, are happy to see the team loading up to make a serious run not just deep into the play-offs but also winning the Stanley Cup. Will Iginla put the Penguins over the top? We will have to wait and see.
