Looking back at 2012

Well, I will say one thing for the year 2012……it really kicked my ass. Whether it was exciting changes or sad disappointments, the past year has really tested me in a manner that I have never been tested before. Because of this, I wanted to do something new and different to touch upon why this year was so important and powerful.

I want to look at the various topics and items that impacted me this past year in the various different fields of interest I have and present them here. Why not have a mixture of the positive, the negative and the surprising all together? Just remember…..these are MY opinions and are presented as such.

BEST MOVIE OF THE YEAR

THE AVENGERS

best movie

Do I even have to say why this was the best movie I saw this past year? It is a ground breaking comic book spectacle that merges different various movie franchises into one amazing movie. The Avengers raised the bar for what I expect to see in a movie going forward.

BEST SHOW

RED VS BLUE

81eNkDNBW6L._AA1473_

This is a complete no-brainer for me. I have pretty much swore off all television, except for Big Bang Theory, and have turned to the content produced by Roosterteeth Productions. Even though it is only found on the internet, Red vs Blue has become a premier example of what great writing, humor and action can give you.

BEST COMIC BOOK

JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY

best comic

One of the most consistent and spectacular comic books this past year was Journey Into Mystery. Writer Keiron Gillen took a book that was an after thought, developed a character that was an after thought in Loki and crafted some of the best stories to hit the comic book world. A book that no one expected to survive the loss of Thor (as he splintered off into his own book) actually thrived.

BEST ALBUM

IMAGINAERUM by NIGHTWISH

best cd

I will go on the record and say that Imaginaerum is just not the best Nightwish album to date, but it is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. The ability of song writer/keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen is something out of this world and he once again pushes Nightwish to the next level. Having more vocal work for Marco Hietala is ALWAYS a good thing!

BEST VIDEO GAME

HALO 4 – LEGENDARY COLLECTION

best game

What makes Halo 4 so great? It has breath taking graphics, a story that will draw you in emotionally, phenomenal voice acting, the always great multi-player and the proof that sometimes someone else can step into an existing universe and take it to the next level as 343 Studios did here. Everyone thought that the Halo franchise was done when Bungie walked away, now everyone can not wait for the next installment.

BEST SPORTS MOMENT

MIGUEL CABRERA WINS TRIPLE CROWN

best athlete

To see someone win the Triple Crown in my life time is something that I will never forget, as I was completely caught up in the race for the crown for Miguel Cabrera. The slugger for the Detroit Tigers did something that everyone thought may not ever happen again, as he slugged his way to a 44 homerun, 139 RBI and .330 average season.

BEST PERSONAL MOMENT

HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS LIVE IN PERSON

best moment

I had the amazing opportunity to watch the top ranked team in Canadian Junior Hockey this past year, as I was able to finally catch a Halifax Mooseheads game. The victory over the PEI Rocket was a great experience and allowed me to see two of the best up and coming hockey stars in Nathan Mackinnon and Jonathan Drouin of Halifax.

MOST SHOCKING MOMENT

ANETTE OLZON OUT, FLOOR JANSEN IN

I could not believe my eyes when I read that Nightwish had let go lead singer Anette Olzon in the midst of their world tour for their new album “Imaginaerum.” What was even more shocking is that Floor Jansen stepped in right away to finish the tour and was named in-term vocalist. I am seriously hoping the band keeps her as she is the perfect fit for the band.

MOST UNDERWHELMING MOVIE

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

936full-the-dark-knight-rises-poster

I was extremely disappointed in how Bane was changed from a physical and intellectual equal to Batman and relegated to a love sick puppy during this film. Many aspects of the story felt forced and seemed shoehorned into in the mix and please do not get me started on bane’s muffled voice and Batman’s over the top throat speaking.

MOST DISAPPOINTING COMIC

THE MIGHTY THOR

MIGHTYTHOR001-0

I was very excited and hopeful for Matt Fraction’s run on The Mighty Thor. However, I began to notice a very sad premise in how he would script story arcs. They start off with a great idea that gets somewhat muddled as it unfolds, it then fails to offer any pay off and only resulted in damaging the character of Thor more each time.

MOST DISAPPOINTING SPORTS NEWS

NHL / NHLPA CBA LOCKOUT

nhl-lockout

Another NHL Collective Bargaining Agreement expires and another NHL/NHLPA squabble over money that results in a lock out. This is the third such lock out during the tenure of commissioner Gary Bettman and it may be the toughest to bounce back from. The NHL has expanded into markets that have been struggling to survive for many years and this may just kill those teams.

MOST DISAPPOINTING VIDEO GAME NEWS

NCSOFT CLOSES CITY OF HEROES AND PARAGON STUDIOS

City_Of_Heroes_324200935509PM723

I was disillusioned when I read that NCSoft was shutting down City Of Heroes and disbanding the development team of the game, Paragon Studios. I had been an avid player and supporter for the game for over 8 years and even though MMO’s close all the time, COH was different. It was still making NCSoft lots of money and the dev team was still churning out amazing content. I am still sad over this one.
