I remember when I first heard that Marvel was going to attempt a Thor movie years ago and I was skeptical if they could pull it off. It is not that I didn’t believe in the project, for as a HUGE fan of The Thunder Gods it was something I wanted. Thor is just a different sell to the casual masses. He is a God, has had a loyal but small following compared to other comic book heroes and will usually be involved with stories that border on Middle Earth as well as our Earth.
But Marvel pulled it off and then cemented Thor as a major character in their Cinematic Universe by being a founding member of The Avengers. I knew a sequel was green lit for my favorite Avenger but this year at San Diego Comic Con, we were given an official title and you can see it in the banner above: Thor – The Dark World.
The title, later revealed casting postings and shooting locations has generated some speculation about the second chapter in Thor’s film franchise. I want to look at three possible opportunities that we could see.
The title of “The Dark World” and the revelation that the movie was currently shooting underground has led many fans to speculate that the Dark Elves of Svartalfheim will play a major role in the film. Of course if we see the Dark Elves, then we will surely see Malekith The Accursed. Who is Malekith?
He is simply the ruler of the Dark Elves, who follow him loyally, and is one of the more powerful beings in the 9 Realms. According to his wiki page:
“Malekith has all the normal attributes of a member of the race of dark elves, although his abilities are as a result of above-average development. He possesses superhuman intellect, strength, speed, stamina, durability, agility, and reflexes.
As a dark elf, Malekith also has the ability to manipulate the forces of magic for a variety of effects, including teleportation, energy projection, physical malleability, flight (by transforming into mist) illusion casting, and the ability to change the shape and appearance of other beings or objects.
Malekith has a vulnerability to iron, which disrupts or cancels his magical spells.”
It was reported that there was a casting call placed for a comic book movie that required a “specific” set of skills. The actors trying out for the roll would need the ability to handle fire. Here is the ad from http://www.comicbookmovie.com/:
“‘Men of Fire
For the a new Marvel Super Hero feature film we are looking for men who are skilled in playing with fire to pretend to be warriors.
You must be highly skilled with playing with fire example skills include – Spinning, Fire Sticks, Fire Breathing, Fire eating etc’”.
This has many Thor fans overjoyed as we are interpreting this listing as the possible appearance of Surtur and his fire demon legion. Who is Surtur?
“Surtur, of Muspelheim, was depicted as an immense and malevolent elemental fire demon whose power was of apocalyptic proportions. Standing over 1,000 ft. in height, Surtur possessed strength and durability by far surpassing that of Thor; the ability to generate intense heat, flames or concussive force; molecular manipulation such as transforming his fingers into serpents; levitation and inter-dimensional travel. Surtur’s scale of power is usually shown to equal that of Odin. He is a skilled warrior and swordsman, and has a prehensile tail. He possesses a great intellect, and has vast knowledge of ancient and arcane wisdom. He is vulnerable to intense cold, and can be imprisoned by certain magical spells or by other beings wielding cosmic energy powers equaling his own.
Surtur possesses the giant sword Twilight, also known as the Sword of Doom, composed of a god-like metal known as Scabrite, which can only be found in the mines of Sutur’s realm. The sword is magical, capable of manipulating vast amounts of mystical energy, such as shattering dimensional barriers and inhibiting Odin’s powers. When the sword is bonded with the Eternal Flame, its powers are further increased to an unknown level.”
The Eternal Flame has an unknown connection to Surtur. When in its vicinity, Surtur claimed it increased his powers. It is unknown to what extent this power increase leads to.”
What I am hoping for is that the Dark Elves would be the main focus of the film but have a smaller side story that develops as a possible obstacle for Thor to overcome. A good example for this secondary foe would be Amora The Enchantress and Skurge The Executioner. They are neither “good” or “evil” but have their own agendas and will cross Thor if need be to complete them.
I would tie Surtur to the end of the film so it could set up the third movie. Have the victorious Asgardians, who are exhausted and some injured from battle with the Dark Elves, reflecting on their victory. The skies would rain fire as Surtur and his minions arrive to lay waste to Odin and his people so he can lay the Twilight Sword in the Eternal Flame. This would cause all existence to burn.
It would allow the third movie to start off right at the end of the second one.
What are your thoughts?
